Does “Capturing” or ‘uploading’ footage from a miniDV camcorder wear the heads?
Hi,
I wish to buy a camcorder that uses minidv. I am concerned about head replacement and cleaning because I’m looking at buying something used.
Now does running the vcr of camcorders to view tape or “capture” it onto your computer wear the camcorder’s heads? If so I’m wondering if I should also have a very cheap camcorder on the side that I use for capturing recorded film onto my computer.

The heads will be fine and last a long time . We have several first generation miniDV camcorders that are still working after 5+ years of use, and some were used in desert, freezing, and jungle conditions.
Just be sure to use clean tapes. If in doubt whether the tape is clean, get rid of it and purchase Panasonic AYDVM63PQ tapes from Amazon. These professional grade tapes are built as robust as HDV tape, but they are half the price of consumer grade tape from Wal-Mart and similar stores. A pack of 10 AYDVM63PQ tape from Amazon costs $35 with free shipping. The consumer tape from Wal-Mart costs $75.
