City streets at night with a long shutter speed……questions?
I want to photograph my corner street just after the sun goes down with a long shutter speed to get some headlight trails going around the corner. I’m shooting with a Lumix G1 and it gets very grainy after ISO 1600, so I won’t go any higher than that. Ok, now what shutter speed would be long enough to get the headlights to blur all the way around the corner? Would 5 seconds be enough or should I do like 30 seconds? And should I use a small or large aperture? Thanks.

OH ok, I thought high ISO was needed at night. So I’m guessing the long shutter is enough to let the light in? Very interesting….learn something new every day! Thanks. I’ll try experimenting with different apertures.
Keep your ISO as LOW as possible for best picture quality – I shoot night shots at ISO 100-200. I assume you’re using a tripod or you’ll have too much camera shake.
Use a small aperture (ie larger f no.) – F16 or smaller I’d say. The length of time you’ll need to expose for depends on the number of cars going around the corner and how fast they are going – if you’ve lots of traffic round there, you won’t need to have the shutter open as long as you would if there were less cars. For very long exposures, you have a ‘bulb’ setting (shutter stays open as long as it is held down or locked down). The beauty of digital is that you can experiment with different shutter speeds, review and alter to get the effect you want.
I don’t know if you can get a remote release for your model, but again it will help to reduce shake/vibrations from actually pressing the shutter.
